An Unusual Discovery in Kharkiv

According to Главком: Residents of a five-story building in Kharkiv were met with a startling find on March 31st: a non-venomous Honduran milk snake was discovered inside a washing machine on the fourth floor. The appliance had to be completely disassembled to safely extract the reptile. This species is popular in the exotic pet trade and is commonly kept in terrariums. Authorities from the Animal Control Center believe the snake likely escaped from an enclosure in a neighboring apartment and sought refuge in the machine, posing no threat to people.

Snake Season is Underway

The active season for snakes in the Kharkiv region runs from April through October. In April, snakes emerge from hibernation, and the species most commonly encountered in the city are:

  • Rat snakes (completely harmless)
  • Copperheads (mildly venomous but not considered a real danger to humans)

Experts note that these creatures are reclusive and will always avoid contact with people if possible. It is illegal to kill snakes in the region, as both rat snakes and copperheads are protected species listed in the Red Book of Ukraine.

This incident follows another notable animal rescue in Kharkiv, where 900 bats that had been hibernating for years on a residential balcony were saved in February. The bats' emergence had begun to damage the balcony's structure. These events highlight the occasional, unexpected intersections between urban life and local wildlife. For context, non-native pets like the Honduran milk snake sometimes escape, while native species are protected by law.

The discovery of the exotic snake underscores the importance of public awareness regarding local fauna, especially during peak activity months. As snakes may seek shelter in human dwellings, it is crucial to exercise caution and know how to respond. If a snake is found, residents should contact the appropriate animal services, as the preservation of biodiversity in the region is legally mandated.
