Detention of Metropolitan Hilarion

According to Главком: On May 24, police in Karlovy Vary detained Metropolitan Hilarion (Grigory Alfeyev) on suspicion of illegal drug possession. The incident unfolded after his vehicle was stopped near the Orthodox Church of Saints Peter and Paul. During a search of the trunk, officers discovered four containers holding an unidentified white substance. Metropolitan Hilarion is currently under investigation. His attorney, Michal Pacovský, has stated that his client denies any wrongdoing and believes the charges are a provocation.

Political Background and Consequences

Metropolitan Hilarion, known for publicly backing Russia’s war against Ukraine, has ties to Russian intelligence agencies, which has drawn the attention of the Czech government. Previously, Czech authorities planned to add him to their national sanctions list due to his connections with the FSB. He is already under sanctions imposed by Ukraine. In 2024, he was implicated in a sex scandal when his 20-year-old cell attendant, Georgiy Suzuki, accused him of sexual harassment. This led to Alfeyev’s removal from the Budapest-Hungarian diocese and his reassignment to the Czech Republic. To provide context, the Czech Republic has been increasingly vigilant about Russian influence since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, and this case underscores ongoing tensions.

'I have never been involved in the illegal drug trade, nor do I have any connection to it. For me as a clergyman, even the suggestion of such a thing is completely false. I insist on a full, independent, and procedurally flawless investigation of the incident.' - Metropolitan Hilarion

Currently, his case is drawing significant attention both in Ukraine and the Czech Republic, where issues of sanctions and links to Russian intelligence remain highly relevant.

The detention of Metropolitan Hilarion highlights the complex political situation facing the Czech Republic, particularly regarding its relations with Russia. It has also sparked outrage among Ukrainian citizens, as Hilarion not only supports Russian aggression against Ukraine but also has a history of scandals. At the same time, these events could influence future decisions by Czech authorities on sanctions and cooperation with Russia, especially in light of the international fight against drug trafficking and terrorism financing.
