Deadly Attack on Kyiv: May 24 Update

According to Главком: On May 24, a large-scale Russian assault on the Ukrainian capital resulted in 87 casualties, among them three children. Two women lost their lives. Damage to civilian and administrative infrastructure has been recorded at 49 locations across the city. Cleanup and recovery operations are still ongoing.

Emergency Response Efforts

In the Shevchenkivskyi district, where a direct hit destroyed the entrance section of a five-story building, rescue teams recovered the bodies of the deceased.

'Rescuers dismantled 165 square meters of damaged reinforced concrete slabs. Canine units searched over 100 square meters of the area, and State Emergency Service psychologists provided assistance to 112 people,' the agency reported.

During the night of May 24, Russian forces launched a combined missile and drone barrage against Ukraine. The residence of Albania’s ambassador to Ukraine was also damaged. Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán condemned the coordinated Russian attack on Kyiv and expressed solidarity with the victims and the Ukrainian people. In response, Ukraine has urgently demanded a session of the UN Security Council, as well as a joint meeting of the OSCE Forum for Security Cooperation and the OSCE Permanent Council, in connection with this assault.

Authorities and emergency services continue to work actively on clearing the aftermath and providing aid to those affected.

This attack underscores the ongoing severity of the conflict in Ukraine, now in its second year. The international reaction-including condemnation from Hungary and Ukraine’s call for an urgent UN Security Council meeting-highlights the pressing need for collective action to ensure regional security and stability. For Ukrainian officials and rescue teams, mitigating the attack’s consequences and supporting survivors remain top priorities.

The recent attack on Kyiv is part of a troubling pattern, as evidenced by another significant missile strike earlier this month, which caused extensive fires and damage across the city. This escalation in hostilities highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive understanding of the ongoing conflict.
