Kyiv to Activate Over 1.5 GW of Backup Boilers Ahead of Heating Season
Backup Boiler Construction Underway in Kyiv
According to ХВИЛЯ: Kyiv has launched the construction of new backup boiler facilities designed to be operational during the upcoming heating season. According to city officials, the project is expected to take around two months, with some equipment scheduled for installation by the end of December. These new boilers will add more than 1.5 gigawatts of thermal capacity to the capital's energy system.
The initiative is commissioned by the Service for Infrastructure Recovery and Development in the Kyiv Region alongside the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA). The Ministry of Recovery, Infrastructure, and Transport oversees coordination among the contractors, city authorities, and project managers. Simultaneously, efforts are underway to find alternative gas network connection points, expand work crews, and implement multi-shift schedules to accelerate progress.
The facility, recently transferred from state to municipal ownership, will serve as an additional power source for parts of the city. Kyiv’s Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, confirmed the central heating system’s readiness for the colder months and stated that this redundant heating network will be operational by December. To further support infrastructure resilience, Kyivvodokanal has procured 103 generators to strengthen water supply reliability in case of disruptions.
Mykola Kalashnyk, a representative from the Ministry of Recovery, commented: "I inspected the construction of critical infrastructure protections and backup boilers in Kyiv. Together with city officials, clients, and contractors, we reviewed the actual progress on site."
Kalashnyk emphasized the necessity of completing all phases before launch: "It’s crucial to follow through with commissioning and adjustment works so the equipment can provide consistent heat supply." He added that his team is actively facilitating network connections, approving design solutions, and ensuring equipment availability to help speed up the project wherever possible.
The Significance of These Measures
These developments position Kyiv to deliver stable heating to residents throughout the winter season.
Constructing backup boiler plants is a vital strategy to guarantee reliable heating amid potential energy supply interruptions. The added capacity of over 1.5 GW will ease the burden on existing systems during peak demand. Concurrent investments in water supply infrastructure, such as the acquisition of numerous generators, reflect a holistic approach to urban resilience. Together, these efforts aim to enhance the quality of life for Kyiv's residents by securing essential services during challenging conditions.
