Man Faces Charges for Trying to Smuggle Drugs to Arson Suspect Inside Kyiv Courtroom
Kyiv Courtroom Incident
According to Главком: A 44-year-old man is set to stand trial in Kyiv after attempting to pass narcotics to an individual accused of setting fire to vehicles belonging to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, right inside the Darnytskyi District Court. He tried to hand over methadone and potent medications, including diphenhydramine and zopiclone, to an acquaintance who was facing charges for arson.
The incident unfolded during a court session when the man brought a plastic container filled with pills. The defendant in the vehicle arson case attempted to swallow the pills when the escort noticed the exchange. A subsequent forensic examination confirmed the presence of methadone, diphenhydramine, and zopiclone in the seized tablets. The man’s actions have been classified under Parts 1 of Articles 307 and 321 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The indictment was submitted to the court by prosecutors from the Darnytskyi District Prosecutor’s Office in Kyiv.
Event Details
Reports indicate that the accused had attended the Darnytskyi District Court session as an unregistered listener in May. The capital’s prosecutor’s office confirmed the event, with its press service stating:
“The man brought a plastic container of pills with him and passed it to the detainee. When the escort noticed, the arson defendant tried to quickly swallow the pills.”
It is worth recalling that recently, the Kyiv customs service destroyed 58 kilograms of narcotic and psychotropic substances that had been seized during attempts to illegally bring them into Ukraine. Some of these substances were found in international postal and express shipments, while others were discovered at Boryspil and Zhuliany airports. Smugglers had tried to hide the prohibited items in everyday products such as:
- candy
- chocolate bars
- chewing gum
Earlier, customs officials uncovered a man who devised a unique method for transporting drugs across Ukraine’s customs border.
This case highlights the severity of the illegal drug trade in Ukraine and the risks associated with attempting to pass narcotics even in secure settings like courtrooms. Ultimately, the frequency of such incidents may point to a rising level of drug-related crime, which is a growing concern for law enforcement. Additionally, this event underscores the importance of maintaining strict security controls in courts and other government institutions.
This incident highlights a troubling trend in Kyiv, where attempts to smuggle narcotics are not uncommon. Recently, a drug dealer received a six-year sentence for concealing cocaine within gift soap. Such cases shed light on the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the region, making it crucial to stay informed about the latest developments in this area.
