Recreating Ivan Fedorov’s 1574 'Bukvar'
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: In Kyiv, an exact facsimile of Ivan Fedorov’s 1574 'Bukvar' primer has been reproduced. The only original copy of this historic book is preserved at Harvard University. As part of the 'Returning Cultural Heritage to Ukraine' project, these facsimile editions are being distributed to all schools in the capital. Last year, schools in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district received copies, and now the initiative is expanding throughout the city. This effort aims to reach students nationwide, enabling more young learners to connect with a significant chapter of Ukraine’s cultural legacy.
The Importance of the Facsimile Edition
Ivan Fedorov printed the 'Bukvar' in Lviv in 1574. The sole known original is housed in the United States at Harvard University. The facsimile meticulously replicates the original’s appearance, including its wooden binding and handwritten annotations. This allows students not only to enrich their school libraries but also to experience a tangible link to generations of Ukrainians who contributed to education, printing, and national culture.
“From now on, students across Kyiv will have the opportunity to explore our cultural heritage firsthand. Distributing these facsimile copies is more than just adding books to school collections; it’s a chance for children to connect with the generations who shaped Ukraine’s education system, printing traditions, and cultural identity. Engaging with such works deepens understanding of Ukraine’s history and highlights the value of our unique identity and its role in nation-building.” – Olena Fidanyan
The 'Returning Cultural Heritage to Ukraine' project is part of a broader publishing and educational initiative focused on preserving and promoting Ukrainian culture. Following the distribution of facsimile 'Bukvar' editions to schools in the Shevchenkivskyi district last year, the program now extends to all Kyiv schools. This expansion underscores the commitment to fostering education and preserving national traditions among younger generations.
Reproducing Ivan Fedorov’s 'Bukvar' highlights Ukraine’s dedicated efforts to reclaim and safeguard its cultural heritage, a vital aspect of national identity. This project not only broadens students’ access to historical knowledge but also emphasizes the crucial role of education and cultural awareness in today’s society.
In addition to the remarkable distribution of the facsimile editions, the ongoing efforts to preserve Ukrainian literary heritage are exemplified by initiatives like Knigolav's project, which salvages books after missile strikes. This highlights the resilience of Ukrainian culture amidst adversity, ensuring that important literary works continue to reach readers and foster a deeper connection with the nation’s history.
