Polish Volunteer Killed in Russian Attack Remembered at Kyiv Ceremony
Giving His Life for Ukraine: A Polish Volunteer's Farewell in Kyiv
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: On August 7, Kyiv hosted a farewell ceremony for Marek Rusek-Wolski, the Polish volunteer who died in Kharkiv when a Russian drone struck. Ukrainian and Polish dignitaries attended the event, including Vasyl Bodnar, Ukraine's ambassador to Poland, and Piotr Lukasewicz, Poland's chargé d'affaires in Ukraine. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirmed the ceremony. The event underscored how foreign volunteers have become a key part of Ukraine's wartime support system, often working close to the front lines.
Rusek-Wolski administered the Facebook group 'Razem dla Ukrainy' ('Together for Ukraine'), which he used as a platform to organize aid convoys from 2023 onward. He frequently crossed into Ukraine, delivering food, animal feed, and other essentials to front-line towns and villages, chiefly in the Kharkiv area. On July 27, he was killed by a Russian drone strike while working. Public notice of his death first appeared July 30 in the Razem dla Ukrainy Facebook group.
'It will never destroy Ukrainian-Polish friendship. It will never destroy Ukrainian-Polish allied cooperation. Because this is about a common alliance in the face of the challenges posed not only to Ukraine, but also to Poland and Europe.' Andrii Sybiha
Poland's Foreign Ministry confirmed on August 4 that the volunteer had died in Ukraine. Rusek-Wolski had also helped evacuate the bodies of deceased civilians during July. The commemoration in Kyiv featured photographs of participants, including diplomats from both countries.
This tragic episode draws renewed attention to the risks facing volunteers who try to bring relief to Ukraine during the war. Marek Rusek-Wolski's death is a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by those willing to support others in desperate times. Meanwhile, the foreign minister's remarks reflect the enduring solidarity and partnership between Ukraine and Poland, a bond that remains strong even after such a painful loss.
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine continues to claim lives, as highlighted by the recent tragedy involving Marek Rusek-Wolski. His dedication to humanitarian efforts parallels the risks faced by others in similar roles. For instance, the recent loss of the leader of the “Platsdarm” search team during exhumation operations further emphasizes the dangers that volunteers encounter on the front lines.
