Ceremonial Opening of Imam Shamil Park

According to Главком: On February 4, 2026, a ceremony was held in Kyiv to inaugurate a new public park named for Imam Shamil. This significant event marked the 155th anniversary of the death of this prominent historical figure who resisted the Russian Empire. The decision to name the park was supported by 75 deputies of the Kyiv City Council on December 4, 2025. The name was selected following public consultations and a ranked online vote conducted through the 'Kyiv Digital' application.

Significance of the Event

The opening was announced by Refat Chubarov, Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People. The dedication followed two years of active work by the World Congress of Dagestan Peoples, led by Akhmed Akhmadov. Akhmadov is a participant in the Russo-Ukrainian War, President of the All-Ukrainian Congress of Dagestan Peoples, and President of the Ukrainian K-1 Professional Kickboxing Federation.

The park is situated between Herzen and Ovruchka streets. Deputy Mayor and Secretary of the Kyiv City Council, Volodymyr Bondarenko, noted that 'Imam Shamil, much like Ukraine today, once fought against Russian occupiers. We stand in solidarity with him. Today, naming this park in his honor is a symbol of respect for a figure who embodies the struggle for freedom.'

“There is no doubt: Ukraine will prevail, oppressed peoples will gain freedom, and the Russian barbarians will retreat to their swamps, where they will remain until they learn to live in peace and harmony with all nations.”
