Tram Services Halted in Kyiv Due to Heating Network Failure

Trams stopped due to accident on heat networks
Трамвайний рух у Києві зупинено через аварію в системі опалення.

Kyiv Tram Operations Suspended

According to Главком: Starting at 10:00 AM on June 19, 2025, tram routes No. 22 and No. 25 in Kyiv were suspended following an emergency rupture of heating main lines on Boryspilska Street. The Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA) and Kyivpastrans confirmed the disruption. To compensate for the halted trams, authorities have deployed additional buses on routes No. 51 and No. 63.

Traffic Restrictions and Fare Increase

Separately, partial traffic restrictions on the Pivnichnyi (Northern) Bridge will be in effect from 11:00 AM on June 19 until 7:00 AM on June 22. Meanwhile, the city government has rejected a petition opposing a fare hike to 30 UAH. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that the fare adjustment was driven by:

  • requests from transport companies;
  • prolonged periods without fare changes;
  • substantial increases in energy costs, fuel, wages, and other expenses.

He also cited reduced passenger numbers due to the pandemic and martial law, as well as the need to maintain safe and stable public transport operations, as key factors behind the decision.

The heating main failure and resulting tram suspension represent a major disruption to Kyiv's transport network, likely affecting residents' daily routines. At the same time, the decision to raise fares highlights the economic pressures facing the city. This situation underscores the need to adapt transport infrastructure to new economic realities and calls for attention from both the public and authorities to ensure comfortable use of urban transit.

As the city grapples with the disruption of tram services, it is important to note that public transport fares are also set to increase, reflecting ongoing economic challenges. Starting July 15, the cost of a single ride will rise to 30 UAH, a decision influenced by various factors including rising operational expenses.
