Zelensky and Merz Discuss Airspace Threats and Drone Deal

According to 5 канал: The phone call between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz focused on several security issues, including an incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport and expanded air-defense cooperation. The two leaders also agreed to hold a personal meeting. This exchange comes as drone sightings near European infrastructure draw increasing attention.

Topics raised during the conversation covered:

  • Russia's strike on the Leipzig airfield;
  • Preparation of the Drone Deal agreement;
  • New air-defense system deliveries to Ukraine.

Merz detailed Germany's response to the attack. Zelensky said Ukraine is ready to provide expert assistance and share its experience with Germany. Both nations' teams are now putting the final touches on the Drone Deal text.

The Drone Deal and the Airport Incident

Zelensky said the Drone Deal is designed to improve airspace protection for both Ukraine and Germany. The leaders discussed the agreement's content and a possible timeline for signing, and confirmed plans for an in-person meeting. Additional German air-defense packages are expected this month.

Police at Leipzig/Halle Airport found a drone with an attached object containing a detonator near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane. The device was discovered on the apron shortly before midnight and was treated as a likely explosive device. Airport operations were temporarily suspended, and one cargo aircraft had to circle back for another approach.

About 6 kilometers from the airport, at an altitude of roughly 400 meters, a plane struck an unidentified object. That aircraft went on to land in Hanover, where minor damage to its nose was found. German authorities have classified the episode as a crime against state security and have not ruled out sabotage. The search for the drone operator is ongoing. A separate drone was discovered near Leipzig airport on August 25.

This incident reflects the growing security threats in the region and the value of stronger international defense cooperation. The Drone Deal under discussion between Ukraine and Germany could become an important step toward enhancing both countries' air-defense capabilities.

The recent incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport has prompted Kyiv to extend its support to Berlin in addressing security concerns. In light of this attack, the discussions between the two nations have intensified, focusing on collaborative efforts to enhance airspace safety.
