Ukraine and the UK Launch Joint Commission to Enhance Cultural Collaboration

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: In London, Ukraine’s Minister of Culture, Tetiana Berezhna, and the United Kingdom’s Minister of State, Ian Murray, signed an agreement to create the Ukrainian-British Commission on Cultural Affairs. This initiative aims to strengthen cultural ties within the framework of the century-long partnership between Ukraine and the UK.

The commission is designed to support the ongoing development of bilateral cultural cooperation, facilitate experience sharing, identify joint priorities, and implement cultural projects. It will be co-chaired by representatives from both governments, with key participation from Ukraine’s Ukrainian Institute and the British Council representing the UK. The commission plans to hold annual meetings alternately in Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

Funding Commitments and Cultural Project Discussions

The UK government has allocated £2.8 million in cultural funding for Ukraine through its Ministry of Culture. Of this, £2 million is set aside to back Ukrainian cultural organizations and advance the commission’s priorities tied to the 100-year partnership goals. An additional £800,000 has been earmarked for safeguarding Ukraine’s cultural heritage and launching a pilot project with the Shevchenko Museum.

During the meeting, both sides explored ways to deepen collaboration on cultural preservation and address the extensive damage to Ukraine’s cultural heritage and infrastructure caused by Russian aggression. They also discussed international cultural initiatives, including the exhibition 'Sacred Treasures from Kyiv' at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Tetiana Berezhna stated, 'The establishment of the Ukrainian-British Cultural Commission offers a structured platform to expand cooperation and jointly carry out significant cultural projects.'

The minister emphasized the crucial role of direct collaboration between cultural institutions in both countries as a vital means of protecting and globally showcasing Ukrainian culture.

Further talks covered the development of the publishing sector, promising areas for cooperation, and prospects for joint projects. The British Council’s role in Ukraine was highlighted as instrumental in strengthening this cultural partnership.

Setting up the Ukrainian-British Cultural Commission marks an important milestone in reinforcing cultural connections amid the current challenges facing Ukraine’s cultural heritage. The infusion of financial support and backing for international projects will not only aid in preserving Ukraine’s culture but also elevate its presence on the world stage. This initiative lays a solid foundation for advancing cultural diplomacy and deepening bilateral relations between the two nations.
