Fatal Collision with Protected Bison in Lviv Region

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: On the evening of October 1, a MAN truck hit a rare European bison that suddenly appeared on the Brody–Sheptytsky highway in Lviv region, resulting in the animal's immediate death from injuries. The five-year-old bison, weighing approximately 700 kilograms, belonged to the Lopatyn subpopulation.

The bison emerged from the nearby forest onto the roadway, causing this tragic accident. The Lopatyn subpopulation lives freely within the Mala Polissya area of Brody district in Lviv region, and as of early 2024, this group comprised 135 individuals. European bison populations are also found in the Vinnytsia, Chernivtsi, Volyn, Kyiv, and Sumy regions.

Investigation Underway and Road Safety Concerns

Law enforcement officers are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and determining the appropriate legal response. Alina Podreiko, spokesperson for the National Police in Lviv region, stated that

“a report may be filed against the driver who claims not to have seen the animal.”

This event highlights the critical need for vigilance when driving through areas where wildlife frequently crosses roads.

Collisions involving wild animals pose significant hazards to both drivers and endangered species alike. European bison are a protected species and a vital part of the local ecosystem, making their deaths from human-related incidents a serious conservation concern. Raising awareness among motorists about the risks of wildlife encounters on roads, especially in natural habitats, is essential to preventing future accidents and preserving biodiversity.
