According to Главком: Lviv hosted a series of memorial events marking the 62nd anniversary of the birth of slain linguist and public figure Iryna Farion. The activities included:

  • a memorial service;
  • a joint prayer at the cemetery;
  • the opening of an exhibition;
  • the planting of a commemorative tree.

Born on April 29, 1964, Farion left a profound mark on Ukrainian culture and linguistics. Her work and activism continue to resonate, especially in the context of Ukraine's ongoing struggle for national identity.

Honoring Her Legacy

The memorial service took place at the Garrison Church of Saints Peter and Paul. Following the service, attendees proceeded to the Lychakiv Cemetery for a collective prayer and a flower-laying ceremony at the linguist's grave. Those who came to pay their respects included family members, close friends, city officials, community leaders, and local residents.

At Lviv Polytechnic, an exhibition of posters titled "Painted Language" was inaugurated, highlighting Farion's contributions to the development of the Ukrainian language. Additionally, a commemorative tree was planted at the site where she was attacked. Farion passed away on the evening of July 19, 2024, in a hospital after an assassination attempt on Masaryk Street in Lviv.

Following her death, the Lviv Regional Prosecutor's Office submitted an indictment to the court against 18-year-old Vyacheslav Zinchenko, who is suspected of her murder. Zinchenko faces a potential life sentence.

Words from Iryna Farion's daughter, Sofia Osoba: 'First and foremost, you are my mom. But as I grew older, I realized that my mother is a great Ukrainian woman. Iryna Farion, at the cost of her life and her work, proved what is most precious: that language is both a home and a weapon. My mother is the most precious thing I have. Now she watches over us from heaven, giving us the strength to create and to fight for justice for her killer.'
