According to Главком: Colonel Volodymyr Kononnikov, commander of the 154th Separate Mechanized Brigade, was laid to rest in Mykolaiv after being found dead on June 28. His body was discovered in an open area near a forest strip in the Zaporizhzhia region, with a through-and-through gunshot wound to the temple. His personal pistol was lying next to him. Investigators are currently pursuing three possible explanations for his death: intentional murder, suicide, or negligent handling of a firearm.

“Volodymyr Kononnikov had an outstanding combat career-from a paratrooper soldier to a mechanized brigade commander. He directly fought on the toughest frontlines, was wounded multiple times, but each time returned to duty and continued the fight,” stated representatives of the 154th Separate Mechanized Brigade.

Shortly before his death, Kononnikov sent voice messages and smoked a cigarette. The investigation continues to determine the exact circumstances of his demise.
