A Giant 150 MW Battery Is Coming to Minnesota
Investing in Southern Minnesota's Energy Future
According to НВ — Техно: The state's Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has given the green light for a facility that marks a major investment in the energy future of southern Minnesota. The company Spearmint is developing a standalone energy storage project called Midwater. This system will deliver 150 megawatts of power and hold 600 megawatt-hours of capacity. It will be built on a privately owned plot of 10 to 20 acres, located near the Glenworth substation along Minnesota Highway 65 in Freeborn County.
This energy storage system can supply 150 megawatts of power for roughly four continuous hours, making it a significant addition to the region's energy infrastructure. Its location next to the Glenworth substation allows for a direct connection to the high-voltage grid. The battery will consist of individual, container-sized modules. Each module will house electrical equipment, transformers, fire safety systems, and control infrastructure. This setup makes the system fully self-contained and capable of linking directly to the broader power grid.
How Standalone Systems Strengthen Grid Stability
Peter Rood, Spearmint's chief development officer, highlighted that storage systems like this are critical for improving grid reliability:

He added that as electricity demand rises, such projects provide flexible infrastructure that supports grid stability, makes power more affordable, and simplifies the integration of diverse generation sources.
