According to НВ — Техно: Archaeological excavations in the Italian town of Oderzo have uncovered the remains of an early Christian basilica dating to the 4th–5th centuries. The dig, which began in November 2025 at the site of a former fish market, revealed mosaic floors spanning roughly 325 square feet, wall foundations, and four burial sites. This structure is now recognized as the earliest known Christian place of worship in the town, with its construction placed at the end of the 4th or beginning of the 5th century.

The building's layout and mosaic motifs confirm its dating to the late 4th or early 5th century. Research indicates the structure was rectangular and divided into three naves oriented east to west. Preserved flooring remains in the southern and central naves, featuring polychrome mosaics with geometric and floral patterns. The most intricate panel showcases a large central octagon with a Solomon's knot at its center. Foundations were built from brick and mortar, supported by wooden piles driven into the alluvial soil.

Archaeological Findings and Their Significance

The excavation also uncovered four burials, three of which are double graves. None contain grave goods; human remains and wood piles will undergo radiocarbon dating. The site itself will be preserved, and a new residential complex planned for the area will include a dedicated cultural heritage space.

The excavation site lies outside the city walls of ancient Opitergium, originally settled by the Veneti people. This settlement later gained municipal status and Roman city rights. By the 2nd century, Opitergium's population had reached around 50,000. The region subsequently suffered attacks from Visigoths, Huns, and Ostrogoths, and was later destroyed by the Lombards in 667 AD.

Previous finds in the area include mosaics, tombs, and a Byzantine fort. The Superintendency of Padua ordered thorough excavations, which uncovered fragments of mosaic flooring. This discovery underscores the importance of archaeological research in studying the region's history and cultural heritage.

The discovery of the early Christian basilica in Oderzo holds significance not only for archaeology but also for understanding the history of early Christianity in the region.

This find points to the possible active development of a Christian community in the area as early as the 4th–5th centuries.
