Seven Giant Stone Blocks Form the Basis of a New Dutch Landmark

The Rotterdam Rocks Project in the Netherlands

According to УНІАН — Туризм: A futuristic building named Rotterdam Rocks, designed to serve as both an architectural icon and a symbol of climate action, has been unveiled in the Netherlands. The project was initiated by Shift, a social enterprise that launched an international design competition for its future headquarters last year. The winning entry came from the architecture firm MVRDV, which proposed an unconventional structure made of seven enormous stone blocks seemingly stacked on top of one another.

Key Features of the Design

The building is set to rise in Waterkant, a newly developing district on the southern bank of the Meuse River. Visitors will be able to follow three distinct routes:

• one leading to the hotel and restaurant area,
• another to the exhibition space,
• and a third that winds along the façade via an external serpentine path, climbing to an observation deck.

The exterior walls will feature recesses designed to collect soil and water, highlighting the project’s environmental focus.

The centerpiece of the complex is Elysium, an interactive exhibition spanning 5,000 square meters. Through art and multimedia installations, visitors will explore potential future scenarios for humanity and the role each individual plays in shaping them. The building will also house:

• a 200-room hotel,
• spaces for educational programs,
• venues for business events,
• community meeting areas for local residents,
• a food court and restaurant.

“The bold and recognizable design of Rotterdam Rocks invites people to reflect on the most important questions of our time. Where do we come from? Where are we going? What role can each of us play in shaping the planet’s future?” - Don Rietzen.

According to Rietzen, the project’s core mission is to demonstrate that everyone can contribute to a more sustainable future, even by making small changes in their daily lives.

Rotterdam city council member Chantal Zeegers also emphasized the project’s significance: “It’s encouraging to see that Shift shares these ambitions. This is reflected not only in the original and iconic architecture but also in a program that will inspire both locals and visitors to take part in building a sustainable future.”

Once construction is complete, the organizers expect the Rotterdam Rocks ‘embassy’ to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, underscoring its potential to become a major cultural and educational hub.

The Rotterdam Rocks project highlights the growing emphasis on sustainability in architecture and urban planning, a trend that is increasingly relevant in the face of global climate challenges.
