Germany changes rules for electric vehicles: who is affected by the new requirement
Starting from October 1, 2026, owners of electric vehicles with German license plates E-Kennzeichen can enter environmental zones without the green sticker Umweltplakette. This is another update for drivers following the previous changes in car regulations in Germany. The new regulations are reported by Visit Ukraine.
Who in Germany no longer needs the green sticker
From now on, a license plate with the letter E automatically confirms that the electric vehicle is allowed to be in the Umweltzone. Previously, drivers needed both a special number and a green sticker on the windshield for this.
Who in Germany still needs the Umweltplakette
Environmental zones in Germany are still in effect. The requirements for internal combustion engine vehicles have not changed. The sticker is also still necessary for electric vehicles without a German E plate.
Therefore, owners of vehicles with Ukrainian registration should not assume that the new rule automatically exempts them from the sticker. Before traveling, it is advisable to check the requirements for their specific vehicle. Other changes for electric cars in Europe, including weight restrictions, are described in the article about driving licenses category B and electric vehicles.
The new regulation only concerns the sticker for entering environmental zones, and not other rules for vehicle operation or registration. Drivers planning to travel across Europe should also consider local requirements for electric transport and road fees, including conditions for electric cars on the roads of the Czech Republic.
