According to Главком: Tens of thousands of people gathered in central Prague on February 1 for a major demonstration supporting Czech President Petr Pavel. Organizers from the civic initiative Milion chvilek estimated the crowd at between 80,000 and 90,000, filling the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. The group also announced a petition drive in support of the president, which has already collected approximately 600,000 signatures. This rally highlights a significant public mobilization in a country where political protests of this scale are notable.

Among those present were politicians, including the leader of the Mayors and Independents movement, Vít Rakušan, as well as representatives from the Civic Democratic Party and the Pirate Party. Mikuláš Minář, the leader of Milion chvilek, announced plans for further protest actions across the country on February 15, with a special event scheduled for February 21.

Rising Political Tensions in the Czech Republic

Political tensions have escalated following the publication of correspondence between President Pavel and the leader of the 'Motorists for Themselves' party, Petr Macinka. The conflict stems from the president's refusal to appoint Filip Turek to the government. Turek has previously been involved in investigations over homophobic, racist, and antisemitic remarks. Another point of contention is the debate over military aid to Ukraine, specifically the potential transfer of Aero Vodochody L-159 aircraft.

During the rally, participants held signs expressing support for the president's pro-Ukrainian stance and criticizing Macinka and Turek. Calls to support Ukraine were heard throughout the event. One placard read, 'War awaits us,' while another stated, 'Get out of politics.' Minář emphasized that

“The Czech Republic must not repeat this scenario,”

pointing to heightened public concern over the country's political direction.

The demonstration signals growing political engagement among Czech citizens who are seeking to influence both domestic and foreign policy. The large number of petition signatures reflects a public desire for political stability, particularly in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
