The crash occurred on May 21, 2026, at the 49-kilometer mark of the Piski-Sosnovo-Podgorye highway in Leningrad Oblast. Smirnov, riding a Triumph motorcycle, crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a Haval car. He died at the scene before paramedics could arrive.

The tragedy has sparked discussions about road safety and the accountability of drivers who break traffic laws. This incident highlights how even wealthy and influential individuals are not immune to the consequences of reckless behavior behind the wheel.

The death of Mikhail Smirnov underscores the importance of obeying traffic rules, especially when drivers lack the proper permits.

Given his business stature, this crash may lead to increased scrutiny of road safety and the responsibility of entrepreneurs for their actions. It also raises questions about the regulatory mechanisms overseeing traffic safety in the country, as Smirnov had accumulated numerous violations in recent years.
