Remains of Colonel Yevhen Konovalets Exhumed in Rotterdam Ahead of Return to Ukraine

A Grave Reopened: Exhumation at Rotterdam's Crosswijk Cemetery

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: The remains of Colonel Yevhen Konovalets have been recovered from Rotterdam's Crosswijk cemetery. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered the exhumation, according to the Presidential Office, with Kyrylo Budanov, Andrii Sybiha, and Oleksandr Alfiorov and their teams handling the organizational work behind the operation.

Ceremony Participants and Gathering

Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Iryna Vereshchuk, Ukraine's ambassador to the Netherlands Andrii Kostin, and Oleksandr Alfiorov, head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, took part in the ceremony. Also present were members of the Dutch Ukrainian community, representatives of Plast, the Ukrainian Rifle Community of Canada, the Ukrainian National Federation of Canada, and clergy from the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church.

Konovalets' ashes will be brought to Ukraine and reburied at the National Military Memorial Cemetery. A public farewell is planned on the grounds of the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church in Kyiv.

The exhumation is a meaningful stride in honoring the legacy of a prominent Ukrainian military and political leader who played an essential part in the country's struggle for independence. Bringing his remains home signals recognition of his service and a determination to preserve the memory of those who fought for Ukraine's freedom.
