Cultural Heritage Monitoring in Ukraine

According to Главком: The National Reserve of St. Sophia of Kyiv has been equipped with 28 seismic sensors designed to track vibration impacts on its historic structures. This monitoring system, active for nearly 20 years, helps assess the condition of cultural heritage sites. The project was carried out with support from UNESCO, which funded the software, a data-processing computer, and the work of Italian specialists.

Specifically, 20 sensors were installed on St. Sophia Cathedral, and 8 on the bell tower. These devices will detect vibrations caused by:

  • explosions;
  • overflights of missiles and drones;
  • road traffic;
  • concerts.

This system will also allow monitoring of potential earthquake impacts originating from the Vrancea zone in Romania.

On June 10, 2025, St. Sophia Cathedral was damaged as a result of shelling. In February 2026, a UNESCO (ICOMOS) monitoring mission arrived in Kyiv to assess the site's preservation status. The reserve's director general, Nelya Kukovalska, stated:

'We will understand where the key points are in the monuments that require attention, and which may need reinforcement to preserve the structure.' - Nelya Kukovalska

Thus, the implementation of this seismic sensor project marks a significant step in protecting Ukraine's cultural heritage, which faces serious risks amid modern challenges.

The Role of Technology in Heritage Preservation

Installing seismic sensors on St. Sophia Cathedral and its bell tower underscores the importance of monitoring cultural landmarks in the face of contemporary threats, particularly military actions. This initiative not only helps identify potential risks to architectural sites but also aids in preserving national heritage for future generations. Given the shelling and other dangers, such technologies are becoming essential for protecting historic monuments that stand as vital symbols of Ukrainian culture.

As efforts to safeguard cultural heritage intensify, the establishment of secure storage locations for valuable museum artifacts in Western Ukraine highlights the proactive measures being taken to protect national treasures. This initiative complements the recent installation of seismic sensors at St. Sophia Cathedral, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive preservation strategies in the face of ongoing threats.
