In Freeborn County, Minnesota, the state’s Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has greenlit a standalone energy storage system called Midwater. Rated at 150 megawatts of power and 600 megawatt-hours of capacity, the facility will occupy a 10-to-20-acre site near the Glenworth substation, located off Minnesota Highway 65. This approval marks a significant step for large-scale battery storage in the region.

The Midwater System

The Midwater system will be built from container-sized modules and operate completely independently. It will connect to the broader grid to help stabilize electricity supply. When fully charged, the battery can deliver 150 megawatts for roughly four hours, making it a critical asset for regional energy management.

Andrew Woranch, founder, president, and CEO of Spearmint, stated that “the siting permit is a vital investment in southern Minnesota’s energy future.”

Peter Rood, Spearmint’s chief development officer, added that “storage systems like this play a key role in strengthening grid reliability.” Their comments underscore how the new installation will not only boost energy efficiency but also ensure a stable power supply for Freeborn County residents.

Deploying this giant battery in Minnesota could mark an important shift toward a more sustainable energy system.
