The Venice Commission prepares a conclusion on the selection of judges of the Constitutional Court: key aspects

On December 1, 2025, a meeting took place at the Constitutional Court of Ukraine with representatives of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe. The event was attended by the Acting Head of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Oleksandr Petryshyn, judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, the Vice-President and expert of the Venice Commission, as well as an advisor and contact person for legal issues.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss draft laws aimed at improving the procedure for the competitive selection of judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. The parties discussed the key provisions of the draft laws and approaches to organizing the competitive selection. The Ukrainian side emphasized the importance of modernizing the competitive procedures to ensure objectivity and independence in the selection of judges.

Judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine expressed the need for continuous cooperation with the Venice Commission to ensure transparent and effective selection procedures for judges. This cooperation will contribute to the implementation of high standards in the field of constitutional justice and increase trust in the composition of the Court.

As a result of the meeting, it became clear that cooperation between Ukrainian institutions and the Venice Commission is aimed at strengthening Ukraine's legal system and increasing trust in its judicial system.
