Rare Triplet Birth at Sumy Regional Perinatal Center

According to Главком: A couple from Ivano-Frankivsk have become parents to triplets at the Sumy Regional Perinatal Center. The father, a serviceman, now has a son and two daughters, who were born prematurely at 32 weeks. The infants are currently under medical supervision in the intensive care unit. This birth is a rare and joyous event, especially poignant as Ukraine continues to endure the hardships of war.

The babies, delivered via cesarean section, weigh between 1.3 kg and 1.9 kg. The parents have named their son Maksym and their daughters Milana and Omeliia. For the mother, Nina Piantkovska, these are her fourth, fifth, and sixth children, while for the father, Illya Zvonetskyi, this is his first experience of parenthood. The couple, who have been together for only a year, plan to marry at his military unit.

Medical Staff Commentary

The center's medical director, Olha Butenko, noted that the last instance of a spontaneous triplet birth at the facility was approximately eight years ago. She emphasized that triplets occur very rarely in nature and are typically associated with assisted reproductive technologies.

"Triplets are, in principle, very rare in nature. Today, a triplet pregnancy is generally considered a diagnosis following IVF," stated Olha Butenko.

The head of the intensive care unit, Valeriia Yankovska, reported that the newborns require:

  • respiratory support
  • phototherapy
  • intravenous feeding

The couple, who plan to return home with their newborns, are currently awaiting an improvement in the children's condition. "I came from Ivano-Frankivsk to be with my husband, who was mobilized two months ago and we hadn't seen each other," shared the mother, Nina Piantkovska, describing her emotions.

The father of the triplets, Oleg Sokhan, reflected on the difficult moments during the delivery: "When my wife was taken for surgery, it was much scarier than being in any combat position. And then came the euphoria, the happiness." He also mentioned that their extended family eagerly awaits them. "Our grandmother, grandfather, Oleg's father and mother are waiting for us there. These are their first grandchildren," added Nina Piantkovska.

This case is a significant event for the medical institution and the family, who eagerly anticipate the possibility of returning home. The birth of triplets is considered a rare occurrence, especially under circumstances where the children are born prematurely. Alongside the parents' joy, this case underscores the critical importance of specialized medical care for newborns requiring intensive support. It also highlights the dedication of the medical staff who provide the necessary treatment and care for the infants and their families during this challenging time.
