Venezuela Earthquake Disaster

According to Главком: A 44-year-old security guard named Hernán Alberto Gil has been rescued in Venezuela after spending eight days buried beneath the debris of a nine-story shopping mall. The building collapsed during an earthquake that struck on June 24. The total death toll from this tragedy has reached 2,595 people. Search and rescue operations began on Monday, involving specialists from Venezuela, Chile, the United States, Portugal, Mexico, and Costa Rica.

Aftermath of the Quake

The earthquake, which registered magnitudes of 7.2 and then 7.5, struck almost simultaneously, with just 39 seconds between the two shocks. It caused severe damage to the coastal region of La Guaira, north of Caracas, where at least 100 buildings collapsed. In response, rescue teams were joined by volunteers, including members of the opposition party Vente, led by Nobel laureate María Corina Machado. However, their efforts faced resistance from the National Police and Civil Protection authorities.

In addition to Gil, other victims were rescued, including a boy who had been trapped under rubble for six days. The Venezuelan government continues search and rescue operations despite the mounting death toll. As Delcy Rodríguez stated,

“the number of fatalities currently stands at 2,595, and the government has not yet halted search and rescue efforts.”

Rescuers are grappling with severe shortages of specialized equipment and heavy machinery.

The European Space Agency has also released satellite imagery showing the extent of the destruction caused by the earthquakes.

This disaster underscores the severe impact of natural catastrophes on human life and infrastructure. The ongoing rescue operations highlight the efforts not only of governments but also of international organizations ready to provide support in overcoming the aftermath. At the same time, the authorities' opposition to volunteers raises concerns about cooperation between different groups during emergencies.
