Vinnytsia Performs Its First Complex Femur Reconstruction Using a Custom 3D-Printed Implant
Innovative Femur Reconstruction Surgery Completed
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: At the Second Vinnytsia Territorial Medical Association, surgeons successfully carried out the region's inaugural intricate procedure to restore a damaged femur using a personalized 3D-printed implant. The patient, a 35-year-old woman, sustained severe injuries in a car accident.
Initially treated at the Kalynivka Central District Hospital, the patient received emergency care that included the placement of a temporary cement spacer and stabilization of the bone with metal plates and screws. After six weeks, this spacer was replaced with a custom-made implant produced through 3D printing technology. Remarkably, the implant is bioresorbable, allowing it to gradually break down inside the body as the patient's own bone tissue regenerates in its place.
The Medical Team and the Significance of the Procedure
The surgical team, led by Maxim Verbin and Serhiy Kovalenko, emphasized the complexity of treating the femur, one of the largest and most critical bones supporting human movement and weight-bearing. Addressing substantial bone defects involves not only filling the missing segments but also ensuring mechanical stability and creating optimal conditions for natural healing and load-bearing capacity.
The patient is currently recovering at home and undergoing rehabilitation. Vinnytsia’s mayor, Serhiy Morgunov, highlighted that this was the first operation of its kind in the region. Meanwhile, Alexander Shysh noted the continuous advancements made by local surgeons who are adopting cutting-edge treatments, including patient-specific implants. Viktor Ziomko added that the expected timeline for the implant to be fully replaced by the patient’s own bone tissue is approximately one year, illustrating a tailored approach to managing complex trauma.
The groundbreaking technique combines three key elements:
- Custom fabrication of the implant tailored to the exact bone defect,
- Use of biodegradable materials that safely dissolve within the body,
- Facilitation of biological bone regeneration to ultimately replace the implant.
This success marks a significant advancement in medical treatment options and paves the way for improved care of severe injuries.
This milestone represents a major leap forward in Ukraine’s medical technology landscape, as 3D-printed implants hold great promise for enhancing outcomes for patients with serious bone damage. By integrating innovative surgical approaches, healthcare providers are elevating treatment effectiveness while expanding the possibilities of personalized medicine-reflecting a strong commitment to innovation and improved healthcare quality for the population.
