In Zhytomyr, testing of Swiss Hess trolleybuses has begun: the vehicles are being tested on city streets without passengers. After the delivery of transport from Switzerland, this is the next stage in preparation for regular routes. This was reported by the Zhytomyr Tram and Trolleybus Administration.

Hess trolleybuses in Zhytomyr: what is being tested in October

On October 19, a two-section low-floor Hess with the fleet number 053 was operating in the city. It traveled along a specially designated route. Such outings are necessary to check the equipment in local conditions, not for transporting people.

During the testing, specialists check the main systems of the trolleybuses:

  • braking system;

  • steering;

  • running gear;

  • electrical equipment.

Separately, the autonomous operation from the diesel generator without connection to the contact network is being tested. This allows for checking the operation of the vehicle in a different mode. At the same time, the enterprise does not disclose which routes it will be used on during passenger services.

Drivers are also getting accustomed to the specificities of Hess. They have already undergone practical training, but before regular operation, they must complete an internship. This involves preparation for driving these vehicles specifically on the streets of Zhytomyr.

Launch of Hess on the routes of Zhytomyr: what procedures remain

The appearance of the trolleybus in the city does not yet indicate the start of passenger service. The vehicles are undergoing certification and registration with the relevant authorities. A specific date for the commencement of regular routes by the Zhytomyr Tram and Trolleybus Administration has not yet been announced.

Previously, the preparation of Swiss trolleybuses included staff training and document processing. Now, the trials on the streets must demonstrate how the equipment performs in real traffic conditions.

For passengers, the main change is still ahead: low-floor two-section vehicles are being prepared for operation, but they cannot be used during testing. The numbers of future routes are also not specified in the announcement.

Zhytomyr is concurrently updating its tram fleet: the city has already resumed services with the Croatian tram Tatra. Its launch was also preceded by checks of equipment and infrastructure, so the arrival of transport and the start of regular operations are different stages.
