UAF Meeting with Ukrainian Premier League Clubs

According to Главком: In response to an official complaint from FC Polissia regarding referee Denys Shurman, the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) convened a meeting with representatives from Ukrainian Premier League (UPL) clubs at the House of Football. The meeting was called by UAF President Andriy Shevchenko after Polissia demanded Shurman's lifetime suspension from officiating, a call publicly supported by several other UPL teams. This incident highlights ongoing tensions over refereeing standards in Ukrainian football, a key concern for the league's integrity.

Delegates from 15 clubs attended the discussions. UAF Technical Director Igor Dedyshin stated there were no fundamental disagreements on the need for arbitration reform. As a result of the meeting, a joint task force was established, comprising:

  • UPL President Yevhen Dykyy
  • representatives from the clubs Veres (Rivne)
  • Dynamo (Kyiv)
  • Kryvbas (Kryvyi Rih)
  • Obolon (Kyiv)
  • Polissia (Zhytomyr)

The task force's first session is scheduled for Monday, April 20, with interim results to be reviewed after two months.

The Match Incident and Polissia's Response

Polissia's complaint stemmed from events during the UPL's 19th-round match between Polissia and Dynamo, officiated by head referee Mykola Balakin with Denys Shurman and Semen Shlonchak serving as VAR officials. The club was outraged when Dynamo defender Bilovar avoided a red card for a serious foul on Polissia player Emerllahu.

"These decisions constitute gross errors that had a direct and decisive impact on the match result, depriving FC Polissia of a playing and numerical advantage against a direct competitor." - Appeal by Butkevych and Usyk

Consequently, Polissia formally requested the 'lifetime suspension of Denys Shurman from refereeing activities.'

UAF President Andriy Shevchenko also criticized the standard of officiating in the Premier League. The UAF has initiated internal investigations into several referees and members of the relevant committee. Following the match, Balakin and Shurman underwent polygraph tests. It is also worth noting that the PFL has announced the creation of a Third League in Ukraine.

This controversy underscores the growing pressure within Ukrainian football to address refereeing issues and implement reforms that enhance transparency and fairness. The formation of the task force signals the UAF's willingness to engage in dialogue with clubs to resolve match-related disputes. The group's subsequent actions could significantly influence the future of arbitration in Ukraine and potentially affect the international perception of Ukrainian football.

The recent meeting organized by UAF President Andriy Shevchenko underscores the pressing need for reform in officiating standards, a topic that has been contentious among UPL clubs.
