Attack on the Moscow Oil Refinery

According to Главком: A drone assault on the Moscow Oil Refinery on May 17 brought crude processing to a temporary halt. Twelve people, mostly construction workers near the main gate, sustained injuries. According to Reuters, no critical equipment damage occurred, and the shutdown was implemented as a precautionary measure. Full production is expected to resume within several days.

Other Targets Hit

Beyond the Moscow refinery, drones struck additional sites, including:

  • The Elma technopark in Zelenograd
  • The Solnechnogorsk oil pumping station in the village of Durikino
  • Sheremetyevo Airport, where a fire broke out near the third runway
  • The Raduga Design Bureau in Dubna, a developer of cruise missiles

Dmitry Rogozin, a Russian senator and former head of Roscosmos, commented on the overnight attack, stating that the refinery's technological infrastructure remained intact.

Reports indicate that a defense industry enterprise and three oil logistics facilities in the Moscow region were also struck. Additionally, Russian authorities claimed a record 556 drones were intercepted across various regions. Ukraine's Security Service, in coordination with the Ukrainian Armed Forces, conducted a long-range special operation targeting strategic sites within Russia and temporarily occupied Crimea, destroying air defense systems and airfield infrastructure on the peninsula.

This attack is part of the escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia amid the ongoing conflict. Strikes on critical infrastructure like oil refineries and defense plants highlight evolving battlefield tactics. The record number of downed drones also underscores the heavy reliance on unmanned aerial vehicles by both sides to achieve military objectives.

As tensions escalate, the recent drone strikes not only targeted the Moscow Oil Refinery but also affected critical infrastructure in the region.
