Ukrainian Cash Transport Staff Detained in Hungary

According to Главком: Hungarian law enforcement officers detained Ukrainian cash couriers in Budapest on March 6, an incident that has caused significant concern in Kyiv. The employees of the state-owned Oschadbank were transporting cash from Austria to Ukraine when they were arrested on suspicion of money laundering. Ukrainian consular officials were denied access to the detained personnel.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has publicly stated that Ukraine views this situation as a potential provocation.

“We saw hints a few days before this incident that some provocation was being prepared and, you know, it's like a confession or an admission of guilt in advance,” the minister declared.

He also suggested that recent trips to Moscow by certain Hungarian officials are part of a 'chain of certain events, certain provocations'.

“They should probably be expected further, unfortunately,” he added.

This incident occurs against a backdrop of long-standing political tensions between the two nations, particularly over minority rights and Ukraine's EU aspirations.

In response, Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised its citizens to temporarily refrain from traveling to Hungary. The National Bank of Ukraine has confirmed the detention, underscoring the seriousness with which Kyiv is treating the matter. Andrii Sybiha emphasized that terrorism and hostage-taking remain relevant concerns in the context of this event.

Strain on Bilateral Relations

This event highlights the heightened tensions in Ukraine-Hungary relations, which have deteriorated in recent years over various political and economic issues. The detention of the Ukrainian couriers and the denial of consular access could have far-reaching consequences for bilateral ties, potentially affecting the trust of Ukrainian citizens in traveling to Hungary.

Simultaneously, the Ukrainian government's reaction points to the possibility of further escalation between the two countries, a situation that warrants attention from the international community.
