Ukraine and Raytheon Reach Agreement to Jointly Produce Patriot Interceptors
Joint Manufacturing of Interceptor Missiles
According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukraine and the American defense contractor Raytheon are exploring a partnership to co-produce interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this on July 23 following a meeting with Raytheon Vice President Joseph DeAntona. Such collaboration could significantly bolster Ukraine's defensive capabilities amid the ongoing security challenges.
Zelensky described Raytheon as a 'very strong defense company' whose technology Ukraine has long relied on to counter Russian aggression. He also expressed gratitude for the company's willingness to elevate the partnership to 'an even higher level,' with Ukraine jointly manufacturing critical air defense assets alongside Raytheon.
'President Trump and I discussed this in Ankara, and now is the time to move forward in this direction,' President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized.
Areas of Cooperation and Future Prospects
The discussions between Ukraine and Raytheon also covered additional avenues of collaboration related to non-offensive military equipment. Reports indicate that setting up Patriot production in Ukraine could take several years. A deal involving British howitzers may unlock new opportunities for manufacturing Patriot systems. Meanwhile, Lockheed has pledged to reduce the cost of Patriot interceptors.
Zelensky further stated:
'Our teams-both at the governmental level and from the private sector-will remain in contact to finalize all details,' while thanking the United States for its support of Ukraine.
Ukraine's collaboration with Raytheon on manufacturing Patriot interceptor systems represents a pivotal step in strengthening the nation's defense, especially amid ongoing aggression. Producing such advanced technology on Ukrainian soil would reduce reliance on imports and accelerate military modernization efforts. It also opens the door for deeper cooperation with other international defense partners, which could positively impact regional security dynamics.
In light of the ongoing discussions regarding military collaboration, it's worth noting that plans for Ukraine to manufacture Patriot missiles under license have also been announced. This development could complement the efforts with Raytheon and further enhance Ukraine's defense capabilities as it navigates the complexities of regional security challenges.
