Ukraine Braces for Russian WMD Threat: New Strategy to Be Reviewed by Parliament
Roman Kostenko Highlights Ukraine's Need for Enhanced Preparedness
According to Главком: Roman Kostenko, secretary of the defense committee in Ukraine's parliament, has stressed the urgent need to bolster the country's readiness against the potential use of weapons of mass destruction by Russia. In response, the Verkhovna Rada will examine a new strategy focused on biological, chemical, and nuclear security. Kostenko pointed out that in 2024, Moscow updated its nuclear doctrine, broadening the conditions under which it could deploy nuclear arms.
Why Readiness Matters Now More Than Ever
Speaking on the NTA television channel, Kostenko warned:
“We are fighting a state that possesses the largest arsenal of weapons of mass destruction.” - Roman Kostenko
He also emphasized that Ukraine must reclaim the response capabilities it has lost, stating: “Unfortunately, we lost that. Now, I believe we will restore it.”
The committee secretary noted that if Russia perceives a threat of attack from any party, it may resort to a preemptive nuclear strike, effectively giving itself a free hand. Kostenko urged all services to be on high alert: “We must understand that Ukraine has to be prepared for this. Every service needs to be ready.” He underscored the importance of anticipating potential threats: “We need to forecast everything and be ready for anything, because we know who we are fighting.”
Given these challenges, the roles of the Ministry of Defense, the State Emergency Service, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and NATO allies are becoming increasingly critical to strengthening Ukraine's national security.
These remarks reflect growing concern among Ukrainian officials about the country's safety amid escalating military threats from Russia. Boosting readiness for a possible WMD attack will require not only new legislation but also close coordination with international partners-a move that could reshape the strategic landscape in the region. Such measures may also help ensure greater stability and security for Ukraine's population as the conflict intensifies.
As Ukraine prepares to address the looming threat of weapons of mass destruction, it is essential to consider the broader implications of Russia's military strategies. Recent insights from President Zelensky regarding Moscow's next offensive and expanded mobilization shed light on the urgent need for comprehensive national security measures. Understanding these developments is crucial for grasping the full scope of the challenges Ukraine faces in this critical period.
