Madrid Hosts Conference on Feminist Foreign Policy

According to Embajada de Ucrania en el Reino de España: Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Maryana Betsa addressed the 5th Ministerial Conference on Feminist Foreign Policy, held in Madrid. Titled 'Peace and Democracy Facing the Challenges of the 21st Century: A Feminist Foreign Policy,' the event brought together representatives from various nations to stress the critical role of gender equality and human rights in today's world.

Ukraine's Ambassador to Spain, Yulia Sokolovska, reflected on the conference outcomes, highlighting Spain’s leadership within the EU in advancing gender equality and protecting human rights. She emphasized that Spain’s experience is particularly valuable for Ukraine, as the ongoing Russian aggression gives issues of human security, dignity, and equal participation for women not only a humanitarian but also a security dimension.

“Sustainable peace is impossible without inclusive leadership,” stated Yulia Sokolovska.

Sokolovska further noted that Ukrainian women are a driving force for change, making significant contributions to strengthening the country's defense capabilities, effective humanitarian responses, and the post-war recovery of Ukraine. These points underscore the necessity of women's involvement across all sectors of life, especially when a nation confronts severe challenges.

The Crucial Role of Women in Shaping the Future

By attending this conference, Ukrainian delegates demonstrated the active participation of women in processes that shape Ukraine’s future, as well as the importance of international collaboration on gender equality and human rights issues.

This conference served as a vital platform for debating gender equality in the context of the global challenges countries currently face. Focusing on women’s roles in ensuring peace and security reinforces the need for their active engagement in political and social processes, particularly in nations experiencing conflict or aggression. Partnering with international actors on such initiatives can help improve the status of women and foster the holistic development of societies striving for justice and equality.

The discussions at the Madrid conference are particularly timely, given Ukraine's ongoing journey towards EU integration. As noted by Ukraine's Ambassador to Spain, the nation's progress in this regard is closely tied to its commitment to gender equality and human rights.
