Ukraine is among the first in the world to launch Starlink Direct to Cell: how satellite communication will work
According to glavcom.ua: Ukraine is preparing to implement a new technology, Starlink Direct to Cell, which will allow Ukrainians to stay connected without mobile network coverage via SMS. This means users will not need to purchase additional equipment, only a smartphone with a standard SIM or ESIM card. The technology will provide the ability to stay connected in any conditions, even in hard-to-reach places where there is no usual mobile coverage.
«Thanks to satellite technology, users do not need to buy expensive equipment – a 4G smartphone with a SIM or ESIM card is enough. Ukrainians will be able to stay connected in hard-to-reach places: in the mountains, during bad weather, network outages, or power outages. The main condition for the technology is direct visibility of the sky. During the meeting, we successfully exchanged the first text messages via satellite directly from smartphones», – emphasized the Minister of Digital Transformation.
This technology has already been tested in Ukraine, and the official launch is planned for this fall. Ukraine, along with other countries that are also implementing the Direct to Cell technology, demonstrates its readiness for innovation in mobile communications. For Ukrainian consumers, this could be a significant achievement in ensuring reliable communication even in the most remote corners of the country.
