Ukraine Rejects Russia’s May 9 Ceasefire Proposal
Ukraine Declines Russian Ceasefire Offer
According to ХВИЛЯ: On May 4, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a unilateral Ukrainian ceasefire starting May 6, but reported that Russia violated it 1,820 times by 10:00 AM on May 6. Consequently, Ukraine sees no point in adhering to the truce proposed by Moscow. A senior Ukrainian official told the Kyiv Independent that the country will not observe a silence regime for the sake of a military parade. Zelensky emphasized that human life is far more valuable than any anniversary celebrations. Oleksandr Merezhko, head of the Verkhovna Rada’s foreign affairs committee, characterized Putin’s proposal as 'a sign of weakness and panic,' adding that 'Putin’s nightmare is the disruption or failure of the military parade,' which could signal to the Russian public that their president is weak.
Ukraine’s Stance and Russia’s Response
Zelensky noted that Ukraine has not received an official written proposal from Moscow outlining the terms of a ceasefire. Earlier, during Orthodox Easter, Russia violated Ukraine’s ceasefire 10,721 times in just 32 hours. Meanwhile, Rodion Miroshnik, a Russian Foreign Ministry ambassador-at-large, claimed that Ukraine struck occupied Crimea and the Bryansk region. However, as of publication, Kyiv had not responded to these allegations. Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs backed Zelensky’s statements on Russian ceasefire violations. Andriy Sybiha, commenting on the situation, said Moscow 'once again ignored a realistic and fair call for a cessation of hostilities.' He added that 'fake calls for a ceasefire on May 9 have nothing to do with diplomacy' and that 'Putin cares only about military parades, not human lives.'
Ukraine continues to insist on an unconditional ceasefire, while Russia’s proposals are seen as attempts to divert attention from the real issues of the armed conflict. This rejection underscores the ongoing tension between the two countries and the persistence of military operations despite holiday dates. Historically, such proposals are often used as tools to bolster domestic political positions, so by rejecting them, Ukraine aims to highlight the genuine threats to its national security.
As tensions escalate, the situation surrounding potential military actions intensifies. Given the recent threats from Putin regarding strikes on Kyiv during the May 9 parade, it becomes crucial to understand the broader implications of these developments.
