Major Defense Agreement with Sweden Announced

According to ХВИЛЯ: A joint statement released by the Office of the President of Ukraine on May 28 reveals a sweeping defense agreement with Sweden, under which Kyiv intends to acquire Swedish Gripen fighter jets. Strengthening Ukraine's air defense has been identified as the top priority. As part of this deal, the Swedish government is enabling Ukraine to purchase up to 20 Gripen E/F variant jets for 2.5 billion euros, funded through a European Union credit under the Ukraine Support Loan program.

Additionally, Sweden plans to donate 16 Gripen C/D fighter jets to Ukraine as part of bilateral aid. Stockholm has also unveiled its largest military assistance package for Ukraine to date, which includes:

• electronic warfare systems
• innovation support

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who traveled to Sweden for a working visit, underscored the agreement's significance, stating:

“We are preparing a major defense package for Ukraine and a strong step regarding Gripen fighters, which will definitely make our combat aviation more effective.”

He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, saying:

“Thank you, Ulf, for ensuring that our relations-between Ukraine and Sweden-are always meaningful, and our cooperation is strong.”

Meetings between the Ukrainian leader and the Swedish prime minister included representatives from the defense industry, highlighting the importance of collaboration in the defense sector.
