Patriot Missile Deliveries to Ukraine

According to Рубрика — Політика: In 2026, the United States supplied Ukraine with an average of 12 Patriot missiles per month. This number falls far short of the approximately 150 ballistic missiles Ukraine’s air defense systems intercept monthly. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attributed the limited supply of American missiles to the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, explaining that any transfer of missiles from third countries requires US approval. Although US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth authorized the shipment of 12 missiles, this volume does not meet Ukraine’s urgent needs amid active combat operations.

Zelensky revealed that Ukraine expended 35 missiles in one month and managed to source an additional 23 from other directions. He emphasized that NATO standards call for at least twice as many interceptor missiles as the number of ballistic missiles produced monthly by Russia, which currently manufactures around 140 such rockets.

“Certainly, my agreements with other nations impacted the number of Patriot missiles available to Ukraine, but from America, we received 12 missiles monthly. The reason is the Middle East. Imagine this: you can count on 150 missiles per year from the US, yet you must shoot down 150 ballistic missiles every month,”

Volodymyr Zelensky

At a meeting in New York on September 25, 2026, Zelensky secured a license to produce Patriot missiles domestically in Ukraine. Earlier, on July 13, 2026, he confirmed a deal with Donald Trump granting Ukraine this license. Zelensky noted, “Trump promised to do everything possible to facilitate missile deliveries but pointed out that the US also faces shortages of this weapon system.”

Military Aid and the Challenge of Missile Shortages

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom pledged £100 million in new military assistance to Ukraine, including Patriot missiles, artillery shells, and drones. Zelensky acknowledged that receiving 100 missiles per month would be a significant challenge for Ukraine. “Every day I am working to secure the necessary weaponry, and each week I prepare new aid packages to counter Russian ballistic missile threats,” he added.

Ukraine faces a critical missile shortage that demands urgent attention, as front-line conditions require enhanced air defense capabilities. Poland plans to establish the only Patriot missile service center outside the US, which could improve maintenance and readiness. Additionally, Greece and Spain have Patriot missiles nearing expiration, and these are being requested for delivery to Ukraine.

Despite ongoing intense fighting, Ukraine continues to actively pursue new avenues to bolster its defense capacity.

The current state of Patriot missile supplies and overall air defense provisioning highlights the pressing need for adequate military equipment in Ukraine. The missile deficit presents serious challenges amid active hostilities, making international cooperation and local production essential steps to strengthen Ukraine’s defense against current threats.

As Ukraine navigates the challenges of limited missile supplies, recent discussions involving Greece and Spain highlight the ongoing efforts to bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities. The potential donation of Patriot missiles nearing expiration reflects a proactive approach by European nations to support Ukraine amidst its pressing military needs.
