Easter Prisoner Exchange Brings Soldiers Home

According to Главком: In a significant Easter exchange, Ukraine has secured the return of 12 prisoners of war from the 1st Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine, known as 'Azov'. The commander of the corps, Brigadier General Denys Prokopenko, confirmed the news. Among the freed service members, 11 belong to the 'Azov' Brigade, while one is from the 'Kara-Dag' Brigade.

These soldiers had endured nearly four years in Russian captivity. Denys Prokopenko emphasized the severity of their ordeal, stating:

"Our brothers, who were liberated from Russian captivity, spent almost four years in Russian prisons. They withstood inhuman pressure and horrific torture."

The Azov Regiment, which played a key role in the defense of Mariupol in 2022, has become a potent symbol of Ukrainian resistance, and its members are often held by Russia for extended periods.

Gratitude and the Critical Role of Exchanges

The commander also expressed gratitude to all those facilitating the exchanges, particularly countries providing negotiation platforms. He noted:

"I thank everyone who regularly replenishes our exchange fund, the countries that provide platforms for negotiations and facilitate exchanges, as well as the President of Ukraine, representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Security Service of Ukraine, the Main Intelligence Directorate, the 'Association of Families of Azovstal Defenders,' and everyone involved in the exchange process. We continue to work at all levels to bring every one of our captured brothers home."

This prisoner swap marks a crucial step in the ongoing effort to repatriate Ukrainian defenders from Russian captivity. The prolonged detention of these service members underscores the brutal realities of the conflict. The importance of international support and cooperation with various nations highlights Ukraine's determined efforts to recover its citizens and uphold their rights under the harsh conditions of war.

This recent exchange highlights the ongoing efforts to secure the release of Ukrainian soldiers, similar to the recent return of 40 troops from the Interior Ministry. Such operations not only bring hope to families but also underscore the importance of continued negotiations in the face of adversity.
