Ukraine Appeals to the European Union for Financial Assistance

According to Рубрика — Політика: Ukraine has formally requested an additional €70 billion in aid from the European Union for the year 2027. Despite this urgent appeal, Slovakia and Hungary have declined to back the proposal. At the Brussels summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that the cost of the ongoing war for Ukraine is projected to reach €155 billion in 2027 alone. So far, the EU has approved a €90 billion loan package for Ukraine, intended to cover financial needs across 2026 and 2027, to be distributed gradually.

Ongoing Budget Talks and Cooperation Efforts

Negotiations over the EU’s budget for 2028-2034 are still underway, with member states struggling to find a unified stance. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico acknowledged that

“reaching an agreement by the end of the year will be challenging”

, although he emphasized Slovakia’s willingness to assist Ukraine through educational initiatives, road infrastructure development, and energy connectivity projects.

Additionally, Ukraine has already received €1.24 billion from the EU under the Ukraine Support Loan defense program. These funds are allocated for drones, interceptor drones, ammunition for unmanned aerial vehicles, and domestically produced missiles.

On October 16, 2026, President Zelensky met with Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar in Brussels during the EU summit for their first official dialogue. Their half-hour discussion covered bilateral relations, Ukraine’s EU accession prospects, and pathways to end the conflict. Both leaders agreed to resume cooperation at various levels and to arrange reciprocal visits, with dates to be coordinated by their respective teams.

Ukraine’s appeal to the EU for further financial support highlights the severe economic pressures caused by the war. The refusal of Slovakia and Hungary to support the aid request illustrates the challenges the EU faces in achieving consensus on funding. Maintaining strong partnerships with European allies remains essential for Ukraine, especially regarding security and defense, as the conflict endures.

As the financial demands of the ongoing conflict continue to escalate, Ukraine's request for substantial aid underscores the urgent need for support from the EU.
