According to Главком: Ukraine is moving forward with plans to integrate Swedish-made Gripen fighter jets as the core of its air power. To strengthen its military capabilities, Kyiv has allocated €2.5 billion from an EU loan package to purchase 20 new Gripen E aircraft. In addition, Sweden is expected to donate 16 older-model Gripens to Ukraine. Future orders could eventually reach as many as 150 jets, underscoring Ukraine’s ambitious strategy to modernize its aerial defense. This shift marks a significant step for a country that has relied heavily on Soviet-era aircraft since the war began.

Key Features of the Gripen Fighter

First flown in 1988, the Gripen offers several advantages that make it well-suited for modern combat. It can take off and land on both military airfields and regular highways, giving it exceptional mobility. The jet is also equipped with long-range Meteor air-to-air missiles, boosting its lethality. Operating costs are around $8,000 per flight hour, a competitive figure that makes it practical for sustained use.

Training for Ukrainian personnel on the Gripen C/D variant has already begun, signaling active preparations to bring the aircraft into active service. Initial deliveries of the new fighters are expected early next year. According to Oleksiy Antoniuk, a representative of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense,

“We operate from dispersed sites, highway strips, and camouflaged positions across the country. The Gripen was built precisely for these conditions.”

Experts highlight the Gripen’s relevance in the conflict with Russia. Johan Huovinen, a lecturer at the Swedish Defence University, noted:

“This will be a test against the very systems this aircraft was designed to counter: those of Russia.”

Saab, the Gripen’s manufacturer, already holds over a hundred orders for the Gripen E model and is expanding production. The company has not ruled out collaboration with Ukraine on repair, maintenance, and component manufacturing.

By pursuing the Gripen, Ukraine is taking decisive steps to overhaul its air force and adapt to contemporary threats.
