Expanded list of countries for streamlined Ukrainian citizenship

According to МЗС: The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved an expansion of the list of countries whose citizens can acquire Ukrainian citizenship through a simplified procedure, adding the Republic of Moldova. This decision is part of the implementation of the updated version of the Law of Ukraine 'On Citizenship of Ukraine'. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha noted that this step is tied to countering Russian attempts to destabilize Moldova through citizenship manipulation in the Transnistria region. Ukraine has long maintained close ties with Moldova, and this move strengthens bilateral cooperation amid regional security concerns.

New opportunities for ethnic Ukrainians from Moldova

Under the new rules, ethnic Ukrainians from the Republic of Moldova residing in the country can obtain Ukrainian citizenship in a simplified manner. Importantly, this procedure allows them to acquire citizenship without renouncing their existing one. Previously, the list included:

  • European Union countries
  • United Kingdom
  • Canada
  • United States
  • Norway
  • Switzerland
  • Iceland
'Now this legal mechanism is open to our neighbors as well – citizens of the Republic of Moldova. A country that has provided assistance to our citizens and supported Ukraine since the first days of the full-scale invasion,' said Andrii Sybiha.

Sybiha believes this decision is a response to the aggressor state's attempts to destabilize friendly Moldova. He emphasized that Ukraine demonstrates leadership, agency, and responsibility, unlike Russia, which seeks destabilization. 'Ukraine's strategic goal has always been, is, and will be the peace, security, and stability of friendly Moldova,' he concluded.

Thus, the innovation in Ukrainian legislation represents an important step in strengthening relations with Moldova and supporting the Ukrainian community living in that country. This policy could also serve as a model for other nations facing similar hybrid threats.

This decision underscores the growing cooperation between Ukraine and Moldova, especially in the context of external threats from Russia. Simplifying the citizenship process may help strengthen ties between the two peoples and support regional stability. In light of current challenges, such a policy could become a key tool for ensuring the security and development of both countries.
