Ukraine Forms New Unit to Target Russia's Maritime Supply Lines
Ukraine's Strategic Pressure on Russia
According to Главком: Ukraine is escalating its strategic campaign against Russia's maritime logistics, specifically targeting the 'shadow fleet' used to circumvent international sanctions. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced the creation of a dedicated unit within the Ministry of Defense to block these supply routes. This move comes as the Ministry is also undertaking a comprehensive mobilization reform and actively collaborating with both Ukrainian and international institutions to achieve shared strategic objectives.
Targeting Oil Refining and Addressing Missile Shortages
Minister Fedorov emphasized the critical importance of restricting Russia's oil refining capacity, stating:
'We will actively work to limit oil refining in the Russian Federation and on other important fronts.'
He further noted that Russia is increasing its exports of crude oil to cover a growing budget deficit, adding:
'That's why they have increased crude oil exports-they need cash. Their budget deficit is growing. So we need to keep up the pressure because we are approaching a pain point.'
In a related challenge, Ukraine is facing a critical shortage of missiles for its Patriot air defense systems. Fedorov pointed out that 'Russia launches missiles at Ukraine straight from the assembly line,' while also highlighting Ukraine's own potential for domestic production: 'According to him, Ukraine has significant potential to independently produce these systems and missiles.' This dual pressure on Russia's economy and Ukraine's own defense industry highlights the interconnected nature of the conflict.
The Minister also stated that his department will soon propose a systemic solution to address long-accumulated problems while maintaining the country's defense capabilities. This confirms Ukraine's ongoing efforts to strengthen its defensive potential and counter Russian aggression.
Ukraine's push to pressure Russian maritime logistics and the energy sector is part of a broader strategic plan to weaken the enemy's economic foundation. The establishment of the new unit to block the shadow fleet demonstrates a systematic approach to a problem exacerbated by intensified Russian military operations. The critical shortage of Patriot missiles further underscores the urgent need for Ukraine to develop its own defense manufacturing capabilities, a factor that could significantly influence the future course of the conflict.
