Japan and Ukraine to Sign Pact for Joint Drone Production
Ukraine and Japan Forge Defense Partnership
According to ХВИЛЯ: Japan and Ukraine are preparing to sign an intergovernmental agreement on the transfer of defense equipment and technology. The deal aims to establish joint production of protective armaments, specifically unmanned systems. Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Ihor Zhovkva, announced this development at the fourth Ukraine-Japan Forum.
A key focus of the future cooperation will be the development of unmanned systems, an area where Japan has expressed particular interest, notably in maritime drones. The issue of technology transfer has been discussed at the level of the Ukrainian President and Japanese leadership, underscoring its importance for both nations. This partnership represents a significant deepening of bilateral ties beyond Japan's substantial financial aid.
Japan's Financial Aid to Ukraine
Since the start of the full-scale war, Japan has provided Ukraine with over $15 billion in assistance. Furthermore, Japan has planned a $6 billion support package for Ukraine in 2026. Ihor Zhovkva noted that Ukraine is ready for cooperation and substantive dialogue in the field of maritime drones, as well as for establishing and expanding relevant contacts both at the interregional level and between specific manufacturers in Ukraine.
