A New Partnership Between Ukraine and Finland

According to Мін. Економіки: Ukraine and Finland have formalized their cooperation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding focused on the UFEM project. This initiative aims to strengthen Ukraine's ability to assess environmental damage and improve monitoring of water quality and terrestrial biodiversity. The project will help Ukraine align its data collection and analysis of surface water quality and biodiversity with European Union standards.

The agreement was established between Ukraine’s Ministry of Economy, the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke), and Ukraine’s State Agency for Water Resources. Through UFEM, Ukraine will gain enhanced capabilities to gather, process, and utilize reliable information regarding surface water conditions and the status of land-based biodiversity. A key component of the project involves advancing Earth remote sensing techniques to identify ecological damage hotspots, enabling more effective environmental monitoring.

The Project’s Role in Environmental Recovery

Irina Ovcharenko emphasized, “Developing a modern environmental monitoring system is essential for Ukraine to understand the extent of the ecological harm caused by the war and to set priorities for recovery.”

This memorandum marks a pivotal step in Ukraine’s environmental recovery efforts following the conflict. Facing significant ecological challenges, the UFEM initiative will provide systematic tools for monitoring and managing natural resources, which is vital for restoring ecosystems and improving public well-being. Collaboration with Finland highlights the importance of international support in advancing sustainable development and ecological resilience in Ukraine.
