Marking 100 Years: A New Era of Canada-Ukraine Partnership

According to Рубрика — Політика: During President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s three-day visit to Canada from September 9 to 11, Ukraine and Canada solidified their long-standing relationship by signing a historic Century Partnership Declaration along with several bilateral agreements aimed at boosting economic, political, and security collaboration. Ukraine’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska, also participated in the signing ceremonies.

The declaration was inked by President Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The total value of the agreements exceeds $2 billion, with over $1 billion allocated by the Canadian government toward strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities. This package includes:

  • Upgrading Ukraine’s air defense systems;
  • Providing Patriot missile supplies;
  • Delivering ammunition for F-16 fighter jets;
  • Collaborative drone manufacturing projects.

Additionally, the two nations finalized a contract for interceptor missile deliveries to support Ukraine’s air defenses, facilitated through the U.S.-led Jump Start mechanism. Security cooperation was further reinforced with the signing of a joint declaration known as the Drone Deal, underlining Canada’s commitment to integrating its technology into Europe’s FREYJA anti-ballistic missile program.

Energy Collaboration and Support Initiatives

Energy cooperation forms a crucial part of the agreements. Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal and Canadian Energy Minister Tim Hodgson signed a statement outlining Canada’s support for Ukraine’s energy sector. This involves rebuilding critical energy infrastructure, expanding energy storage capacity, and ensuring reliable power supply to hospitals. Canada has committed over $430 million in credit guarantees to facilitate gas procurement.

Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted the importance of the defense equipment package, stating:

“This equipment package will help protect the people of Ukraine, its infrastructure, and airspace.”

These agreements open new avenues for bilateral collaboration across defense, energy, and peacebuilding efforts. The core areas of focus include enhancing air defense, joint drone production, participation in the FREYJA program, and strengthening energy security.

Amid regional security challenges, these agreements emphasize the strategic significance of the Canada-Ukraine alliance. Canada’s expanding support in defense and energy sectors is expected to bolster Ukraine’s stability and defense posture. Celebrating a century of partnership, both nations are committed to deepening ties that are vital for their shared future growth and resilience.

As Canada and Ukraine deepen their collaboration through the Century Partnership Declaration, the focus on defense capabilities is paramount. This commitment aligns with Canada's recent involvement in Europe’s FREYJA missile defense initiative, which aims to bolster Ukraine’s security framework.
