Joint Defense Priorities Established by Ukraine and NATO

According to Главком: In the lead-up to the 35th session of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, scheduled for June 18, 2026, Ukraine and NATO have aligned on a fresh set of joint defense priorities. Key topics covered include:

  • bolstering air defense systems,
  • supplying ammunition,
  • scaling up the production of Ukrainian drones.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced this in a social media post.

Specific Cooperation Priorities

Within this collaborative framework, specific priorities were outlined, such as:

  • partner contributions to the PURL program,
  • delivery of PAC-3 missiles via the JUMPSTART mechanism,
  • extended-range projectiles under the Czech initiative,
  • funding for the production of Ukrainian drones.
“We synchronized our priorities ahead of the next meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. Our goal is to ensure that every decision made by our partners aligns as closely as possible with the real needs of the front line and strengthens the Defense Forces. A particular focus is on air defense and anti-ballistic protection.” - Mykhailo Fedorov

In preparation for the meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held several discussions. He spoke with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen about enhancing Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and sent a letter to U.S. leader Donald Trump and the U.S. Congress, highlighting the critical shortage of air defense systems in Ukraine. Mykhailo Fedorov emphasized that “at the same time, the main challenge for protecting Ukrainian skies remains ballistic threats. Russia is unable to achieve its goals on the battlefield, so it continues to attack Ukrainian cities, critical infrastructure, and civilians.”

Through these efforts, Ukraine aims to further strengthen its defense capabilities in partnership with NATO.

This collaboration underscores the importance of integrating Ukrainian defense strategies with international standards, which could significantly enhance the effectiveness of Ukrainian armed forces amid ongoing threats. The adoption of new technologies and support from NATO are critical for ensuring national security and stability in the region. Recent developments indicate a surge in international aid to Ukraine, which could substantially impact the course of the conflict and security across Europe as a whole.

As Ukraine intensifies its defense strategies, the urgency of the situation is underscored by recent events, including a second attack in Dnipro that targeted critical infrastructure. These developments highlight the ongoing threat posed by Russian forces, emphasizing the need for robust air defense systems.
