Prisoner Swap of 157 Each as Ukraine and Russia Hold Talks in Abu Dhabi
Negotiations Between Ukraine and the Russian Federation
According to Главком: On February 4-5, Ukraine and the Russian Federation held a second round of trilateral peace talks in Abu Dhabi, with delegations from the United States also participating. These negotiations, which lasted for two days, resulted in a significant prisoner exchange, with each side returning 157 captured military personnel. This marks the first such exchange in nearly five months. The discussions focused on methods for implementing a ceasefire and monitoring the cessation of hostilities.
The head of the Ukrainian delegation was Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Rustem Umerov. Following the main trilateral meeting, the talks continued in a working group format. The delegations agreed to inform their respective capitals of the results and to continue trilateral negotiations in the coming weeks. A communique issued after the talks stated the discussions were constructive, and the delegations expressed gratitude to the United Arab Emirates for hosting the negotiations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans for a future new meeting within this process.
Significance of the Talks for Peace
These talks represent a notable development in the relationship between Ukraine and Russia, as the prisoner swap-the first in several months-could be a step toward further de-escalation. The discussions on implementing a truce and monitoring a ceasefire also indicate a serious intent by the parties to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict. This diplomatic engagement, facilitated by a third-party nation, provides a rare channel for dialogue amid the ongoing war.
Further meetings could become a crucial stage in the process of restoring stability to the region.
