Potential Revival of Economic Ties Between Ukraine and Syria

According to ХВИЛЯ: Political analyst Yuriy Romanenko has suggested that Ukraine and Syria could re-establish economic relations, potentially through a barter scheme involving the exchange of food supplies for military personnel. Romanenko noted that prior to the Arab Spring in 2011, bilateral trade between the two nations exceeded one billion dollars annually, indicating a historically robust relationship.

'Before all these upheavals, trade between Ukraine and Syria was over a billion dollars. And it was very stable because we supplied food products there, and we supplied a lot of equipment as well' - Yuriy Romanenko.

During his visit, Volodymyr Zelenskyy also emphasized issues of food security. Romanenko believes that reviving economic links could be mutually beneficial for both sides, which are currently facing significant geopolitical pressures.

'I think this could be part of a deal, food in exchange for fighters. Well, it's just logical... when we have, conditionally, food that can be given at a discount, and they have people who can also be obtained at a discount' - Yuriy Romanenko.
