Ukraine and Slovakia Strengthen Ties Through Government Consultations

According to Рубрика — Політика: In Lviv, Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico led bilateral government talks that culminated in several key agreements. Among them was a Joint Declaration on Cooperation and an intergovernmental pact to establish bilingual gymnasiums, which are slated to open as early as the next academic year. These schools aim to enhance educational opportunities by promoting language skills and cultural exchange.

Slovakia also pledged to deliver three electric locomotives compatible with European track standards to Ukraine’s Zakarpattia region by year-end. Discussions further covered the launch of two negotiation clusters to support Ukraine, as well as the initiation of an EU Macroregional Strategy for the Carpathian region. Cooperation within the European SAFE instrument was also a focal point of the dialogue.

Financial Cooperation and Energy Assistance

Another significant outcome was the planned signing of a Framework Agreement on financial cooperation to support energy projects under the Ukraine Investment Framework, involving over 100 million euros. As part of this, Slovakia committed 500,000 euros in energy aid, allocating 300,000 euros towards the second installment for the Civil Protection Shelter Coalition and 200,000 euros to supply medical equipment to Ukrainian hospitals.

Slovakia also confirmed its decision to become a full member of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children. Prime Minister Koretskyi emphasized that the agreement "formalizes current practical arrangements and upcoming initiatives into a clear action plan for our teams." He stressed the importance of maintaining connections with Ukrainians abroad, particularly children displaced by the war, highlighting the need to preserve Ukrainian identity and native language.

The Ukrainian Prime Minister praised Slovakia’s experience on its path to EU integration, noting that "the Ukrainian-Slovak partnership is dynamic and mutually beneficial." The talks also reaffirmed intentions to implement an electronic queue system and joint border control, alongside expanding capacity at border crossings for both passengers and freight.

This meeting marks a significant step forward in Ukraine-Slovakia collaboration, promising to enhance infrastructure and educational prospects in Ukraine. The agreements underscore both nations’ commitment to joint projects that support Ukraine’s European integration and provide crucial aid to citizens affected by the ongoing conflict, especially children.

As Ukraine strengthens its ties with Slovakia, it is essential to note similar efforts with other neighboring countries. For instance, Ukraine and Moldova are also advancing their collaboration in areas such as EU integration and energy security.
